What Is Biohacking?

I think we can all agree that we’d prefer to work smarter rather than harder. We live in an era where we have the internet, smartphones, cars and "Alexa" designed to make our lives better and more efficient. The technologies we use are constantly advancing, but how often do we think about giving ourselves an upgrade? How do we become the best possible version of ourself in the most efficient way possible? This is what biohacking is all about. 

Biohacking is the process of making changes to the environment around you and inside you, so you have more control over your own biology, your health and ultimately your life.

Everything matters. From the food you put in your mouth, the air you breathe, the light you’re exposed to, the quality sleep you get, the thoughts you think and movement of your body.

These factors and countless others, basically rule our health, our behavior and our performance. If one or more of these factors are out of balance (which they almost always are), we start to experience a decline in our health. Symptoms of chronic disease start to pop up; headaches, joint pain, brain fog, poor digestion, etc. and we commonly ignore or even accept these symptoms as “just how it is.”

Biohackers don’t accept “that’s just how it is.”

They dig deep for the “why”, the root cause, and then take action to solve the problem. Additionally, biohackers don’t like to waste time. They figure out the most efficient ways to achieve their goals and often track their diet, exercise and daily habits for quantifiable data. This provides a better understanding of what exactly works for them and what doesn't. It takes trial and error, but believe me, it pays off big. Long term this translates into less sick days, fewer visits to the doctors office and smaller (or zero) medical bills. Instead you can spend your time doing the things you love, feel amazing while doing them and just generally kick ass out in the world. Who wouldn't want that?

By biohacking yourself, you actually have the ability to transform your body so that you perform better, think faster, feel more energized and productive than ever before! For some people this may mean competing in a triathlon or hiking the Appalachian Trail, while for others it might mean having energy and mental focus to spend quality time with your kids or grandkids. Everyone's biology and goals are different, thus the route they take to achieve those goals will be different from the person standing next to them. This is what makes biohacking so unique, powerful and effective. 

so how do you start biohacking?

The word "biohacking" sounds intimidating but it can be very simple. You don’t need to be a scientist, have an at home laboratory or invest in a ton of expensive equipment to get started. The easiest first step (that’s also free!) you can take to start biohacking yourself is to practice awareness.

Start focusing on how your body feels when you wake up in the morning. Does it feel like you have a hangover even though you weren't drinking? Check in with yourself after you eat a meal. How’s your digestion feel? Are you irritable or moody shortly after eating? How quickly are you hungry again? Notice how physical activity makes you feel. Do you feel less stressed after going for a mid-morning walk? Are you training 6 days a week and starting to burn out? 

Start to connect the dots! Keeping a food and mood journal is an excellent way to start tracking yourself and noticing trends that you may have been oblivious to before. Awareness is the greatest tool we have as biohackers!
